In the night of the 18th January 2007 hurricane Kyrill caused extensive damage (e.g. Wikipedia). In Northrhine-Westphalia (above all Sauer- and Siegerland) damage amounts to 10 million solid cubic metres, in Hesse and Bavaria to 4 million each.
In these federal states, but also in Lower Saxony, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt the access to many hiking trails is still impossible or at least restricted. Cleanup efforts often lead to the closure of paths and trails.
Basically supervisors should always check carefully the expedition routes of the different groups prior to the Expedition, especially if the group plans to do the tour in one of the affected forest areas. Moreover it is to say that the normal area for Bronze expeditions is “rural country”, for Silver expeditions “open country” and not “forest”.
