A
Accommodation – a) Osterburken: There are three different accommodation facilities: Alte Bahnmeisterei, Gasthaus Schwanen and Realschule Osterburken. b) Black Forest Base Camp (not yet fixed!).
Activities (S1) – As a part or alongside the different courses and workshops there are activities concerning all four sections of the Award.
Adventure (S1) – Different “adventure aspects” are team-building activities, games & exercises (every day); journeys to the countryside during the ALC and some of the workshops; “City Bound in Heidelberg”.
Aim (E) – The corresponding Wild Country Area websites [link] might help to find a proper aim for your expedition.
ALC (S1) – Abbr. of Award Leaders Course
AMC (S1) – Abbr. of Award Management Course
Alte Bahnmeisterei – German Award House, containing both the National Award Office (Koordinationsbüro) and the German Award's National Educational Establishment (Bildungsstätte).
Assessor (S2/E2) – a) Gold Assessors Course (S2); b) The German Award will provide Assessors for Gold Expeditions (E2) if asked.
Audi – Visiting the “Audi” plant in Neckarsulm is one the optional Workshops activities.

Award Leader – Leader of group of Award participants.
Award Leaders Course (S1) – Constitutes the first part of S1.
Award Management Course (S1) – Constitutes the second part of S1.
Award Officer – Leader of an Award Unit or an Operating Authority.
Award slogan (Germany) – “Du kannst mehr als du glaubst” (“There is more in you than you think”, cf. http://www.kurthahn.org).

Baden-Württemberg – The German state in which Osterburken is situated. Cf. http://www.baden-wuerttemberg.de/en/index.html.

Blackberries (S1) – Optional Workshops activity.
Black Forest Base camp (S2/E2) – Not yet determined.

Camcorder – Optional part of personal equipment.
Camera – Optional part of personal equipment.
Camp beds (S1) – If you are not accommodated in the hotel, you have the options of mattresses on the floor or camp beds. In both cases you need your own sleeping bag.
Camper Van (S1) – If you are accommodated in Alte Bahnmeisterei and don’t like communal bunks, you can also use your campervan.
Certificate – a) At the end of IASS 2011, each participant gets from the German NAA a Certificate of Participation covering the parts she / he has attended. b) There's a chance to get an international certificate for attending the Award Leaders Course.
City Bound in Heidelberg (S1/E1) – By “City Bound in Heidelberg” everybody can explore this famous place in an adventurous way.
Communal bunks (S1) – Used for accommodation in Alte Bahnmeisterei.
Communication – The main means for communication with the Award’s headquarters is e-mail (NOT by phone, because we all are volunteers and can't answer the phone during the day).
Consulate (German) – Participants who need a visa can get it from there.

Courses (S) – a) Award Leaders Course, Award Management Course, Train the Trainer Course (S1). b) Gold Assessors Course (S2).

Documentation (S1) – Participants prepare an IASS 2011 documentation.

Expedition Guide – The UK DofE's Expedition Guide is the main Expedition training resource.
Expedition Safety Card (E) – In Wild Country Areas, every team member must have an Expedition Safety Card. Check www.jugendprogramm.de/bibliothek/medien/literature for an example.
Expedition Track (E) – Elements are: a) (Final) Gold Practice Expedition (E1); b) (Assessed) Gold Expedition (E2).
Experimenta (S1) – Optional Workshops activity in Heilbronn.

Facebook – If you are on Facebook and a Summer School 2011 participant, please join its event website.
Fee – Cf. Costs.
Final Gold Practice Expeditions (E1) – Gold Award Expedition teams, who can verify with their Record Books that they have completed the preliminary stages of the Expedition process successfully, can use the first week of IASS 2011 for doing their Final Gold Practice Expedition. Mode of travel is hiking (Odenwald).
Fitness Activities (S1) – As with the other Award sections, “physical recreation” is part of IASS 2011, because everybody can start or end his / her day with some guided physical activity. Cf. [Fitness Activities]
Flyer – A flyer containing the main details about the IASS 2011 can be downloaded from the IASS 2011 Website.
Folder (S) – Each IASS 2011 course participant gets a folder to collect all seminar records.
Football (S1) – Optional Fitness activity.
Forms Collection (E) – Cf. www.jugendprogramm.de/formularsammlung. Forms whose name begin with an “e” are in English.

Games (S1) – Ice Breakers, Team Builders etc. are part of IASS 2011 activities.

Gold Expeditions (E2) – Gold Award Expedition teams, who either can verify with their Record Books that they have completed the preliminary stages of the Expedition process successfully or did their Final Gold Practice Expedition during the first week of IASS 2011, can use its second week for doing their (assessed) Gold Expedition. Mode of travel is hiking (Southern Black Forest).

Health issues – There is a reciprocal health agreement with the UK and most EU countries, whose citizens are entitled to free medical and dental treatment on presentation of a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). Nationals of other countries should take out medical insurance. Sometimes, medical practitioners will request up-front payment (especially if there is no reciprocal health care agreement).

Insurance – Each IASS 2011 participant has to take care of his / her own insurance.
International Evening (S1/E1) – Highlight of the IASS 2011 is the International Evening, where all participating countries will prepare “exhibition corners” and give presentations.
Invitation Letter – In order to get a visa, more often than not a personal invitation letter is compulsory. Please register as early as possible to get it in time (it might take several weeks for the letter to arrive!).

Kitchen duty (S) – Participants will agree on a rota for “kitchen duty” (i.e. preparing the meals and cleaning the kitchen); part of Summer School Service.
Kurt Hahn – “Inventor” of the Award. Cf. www.kurthahn.org.

Laptop (S) – Optional part of personal equipment
Learning Stations (S1/E1) – “To use learning stations, divide the class into learning teams and rotate the teams through a series of learning stations that require the teams to perform a key task related to the topic under study at each learning station” (Pearson Education, Inc).

Maps (E) – Please check the different Wild Country Area websites (www.jugendprogramm.de/wild-country) for corresponding hints.
Mattresses on the floor (S1/E1) – If you are not accommodated in the hotel, you have the options of mattresses on the floor or camp beds. In both cases you need your own sleeping bag.
Meals (S1) – Every day, all Seminar Track participants have all meals together in the Alte Bahnmeisterei. Meals are prepared by the IASS 2011 participants themselves; cf. Kitchen Duty.
Method (S) – The main Summer School seminar method is “Learning By Doing”. Just like Award helpers, trainers in our Award courses are basically not supposed to act themselves but to make the participants act.
Minimum Age – The minimum age for taking part in Summer School is 16.

Neckar-Odenwald-Kreis – Administrative district in which Osterburken is situated. The district governor is also the regional Award patron!

Odenwald (S1/E1) – Wild Country Area. It will be used by the “Wild Country Area Odenwald” workshop and the Final Gold Practice Expeditions.
Options – Due to its modular design there are three different options for taking part in IASS 2011:
1. First week (Seminar Track: Leaders Courses & Workshops / Train the Trainers Course; Expedition Track: Gold Practise Expeditions) in Osterburken. 2. Second week (Seminar Track: Gold Assessors Course; Expedition Track: Gold Expeditions) in the Southern Black Forest Wild Country Area. 3. Both weeks.

Realschule Osterburken (S1/E1) – The school will probably offer classrooms and showers for accommodation. Check Google Maps…
Registration deadline – Registration deadline is 01.04.2011. If you need a visa and/or a written personal invitation letter, you should register much earlier!
Registration form – The registration form can be downloaded from the IASS 2011 Website or ordered by E-mail.
Residential Project – Gold participants can use the Summer School as their Residential Project.

Schwanen (S1) – “Gasthaus Schwanen” is the hotel accommodation option. There are just shared rooms available.
Seminar Track (S) – In the first week, the Seminar Track includes Award Leaders Course, Workshops, Award Management Course and Train the Trainers Course, while there will be a Gold Assessors Course in the second week.
Service – (S) … “There is “service” – because everybody is involved in course duties, such as providing food, preparing lunch and cleaning the kitchen“ ... (quotation from the IASS 2011 Invitation).
Skills activities – The main “Skills aspects” of the Summer School are the International Evening, and the preparation of IASS 2011 documentation.
Sleeping bag – You will need your own sleeping bag if you are not accommodated in the hotel.
Southern Black Forest (E) – Cf. Southern Black Forest Wild Country Area Website.
Sticker (S1) – Making stickers is on optional leisure time activity.
Supervisor (E) – While on their Practice and/or Qualifying venture, teams are nor accompanied by an adult but supervised.
Swimming (S1) – Optional Fitness activity.

Team – Team of IASS 2011 volunteers, mainly Trainers, Supervisors and Assessors.
