The notion of an International Summer School related to the Award was born in July 2001, when the first announcement of a Canoeing Camp 2002 in Tangersdorf got this subtitle. It was then, in February 2004, that at the end of a seminar in Mikkeli Klaus Vogel proposed the idea of an International Award Summer School (IASS).

Prehistory
The idea of an International Summer School related to the Award was born in July 2001, when the first announcement of a Canoeing Camp 2002 in Tangersdorf got this subtitle [67] *).
In June 2003, a four-days leaders training in the Kapfenburg Academy consisting of an Award Leaders Course followed by an Expedition Course was held for the first time a and got the unofficial adjunct “Summer School”.
It was then, in February 2004, that at the end of a seminar in Mikkeli (Finland) Klaus Vogel proposed the idea of an International Award Summer School (IASS) [2702].
In August 2004 a first (German) Summer School concept was published [5131].
History
2004
Germany presents the IASS idea during the EMAS Conference in September 2004 in Luxembourg [5152] and is asked to apply for a corresponding “Special Project” funding, which is done in the same month.
In November 2004, the International Award approves the introduction of IASS as a “Special Project”.
2005
The first (German) version of the “Award Management Game” is completed in March 2005 [5302].
In October 2005, the first Summer School preparation seminar is held in Osterburken.
2006
From August 18–23, 2006, the 1st International Award Summer School takes place in Osterburken. Represented countries are Czech Republic, Germany and Poland; conference language is German.
IASS 2006 documentation is published in November 2006 [6015].
Also in November 2006, Germany presents IASS 2007 during the 9th International Forum in Edinburgh [6030].
2007
In September 2007, Germany presents IASS 2007 during the “Mosaic of Peace” seminar in Israel [6285].
From October 3–7, 2007, the 2nd International Award Summer School takes place in Osterburken. Represented countries are Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Jordan and United Kingdom. For the first time, the IASS language is English [6293].
Germany presents first details of IASS 2008 during the 1st EMAS Regional Central and South East Europe Seminar in Prague in November 2007 [6345].
During a visit of representatives from the Israel Youth Award in December 2007 in Osterburken, both sides agree to run the training of young leaders from Israel in the framework of IASS 2008.
2008
In April 2008, Germany presents IASS 2008 during the 6th EMAS Regional Conference in Portugal [6436].
From August 26 – 31, 2008, the 3rd International Award Summer School takes place in Osterburken. Countries represented are Germany, Israel, Mongolia, Romania, Poland, Slovenia, and Switzerland [6544].
In September 2008, IASS 2008 web gallery as well as IASS 2009 flyer and brochure are published [6538].
2009
In January 2009, first delegates apply for IASS 2009 [6649].
In its April 2009 issue, “Award World” covers IASS 2009. The IASS 2010 website goes online.
Because IASS 2009 is fully booked, in May 2009 the first delegate registers for IASS 2010 [6715]. Also in May 2009 the first edition of the IASS 2010 flyer is published.
From August 24 – 30, 2009, the 4th International Award Summer School takes place in Osterburken. For the first time, Cyprus, India, Pakistan and the United States are represented. Altogether 14 people, mainly from Africa, didn't get their visa [6784].
In September 2009, the IASS 2009 web gallery and a Facebook event site of IASS 2010 are published.
In October, the documentation of the documentation of IASS 2009 was published [6827]. During the 10th International Forum the International Award Summer School is presented as an example of good practise.
2010
In June 2010, the IASS 2011 website goes online.
From August 23 – 29, 2010, the 5th International Award Summer School takes place in Osterburken. For the first time, Afghanistan and Luxembourg are represented. Altogether 14 people, mainly from Africa, didn't get their visa [6988].
The Management Course of IASS 2010 is the first one with the EFQM Excellence Model 2010 as a framework [7088].
Also in August 2010, Bermuda becomes the official partner of IASS 2011 [6993], and a two-week “Expedition Track” will supplement the seminar programme. Within this track, the German Award will provide the groups’ Supervisors “help to help themselves” [7243].
